De-escalation, communication skills and handling crisis situations are core competencies, and many employers run their own training for this. The work happens within a multi-professional team alongside physicians, psychotherapists and social workers. Rotating shifts are standard, and closed acute wards typically have a higher staffing ratio than open units.

Moving from general nursing into psychiatry means a different kind of relationship work, with more emphasis on communication than on physical care techniques.

What nurses actually do

In Austria the process runs through the state government or Gesundheit Österreich, in Germany through the relevant authority in your state. Professional-level German is required.

Hospitals, especially acute and intensive care wards, run three-shift rotas including nights; care homes are similar but usually with somewhat fewer night shifts. Home care services mostly schedule daytime and early-evening rounds, with fewer night shifts. Practices and outpatient clinics offer predictable hours with no night duty.

Base pay in Germany usually follows TVöD, TV-L or the AVR at church-run providers; in Austria it follows a Kollektivvertrag or a state pay scale. Allowances for night, weekend and holiday shifts, plus difficult-conditions pay for demanding care work, make up a meaningful part of total income.
