From medical degree to specialist
After medical school, Austria requires a basic training period (Basisausbildung), followed by several years of specialty training in a chosen field, or training toward general practice. Germany's equivalent phase is called Weiterbildung, run by the regional medical chambers under a defined training curriculum for each specialty.
Only once specialty training is complete and formally recognised can you use the specialist title and practise independently in that field.
