What automotive and metal trades actually involve

Car mechatronics technicians service and repair vehicles, from routine inspections through electronic diagnostics to repairing electric and hybrid drivetrains. Bodywork specialists fix collision damage, welders and metalworkers join and shape metal components, and machinists produce precision parts on CNC machines.

The work mostly happens in a workshop or production hall, less often on-site. Many of these trades overlap with industry, for example when industrial mechanics maintain production equipment instead of repairing vehicles.

Training and recognition

In Austria the route is an apprenticeship as an automotive technician with a specialty, or as a metal technician with the relevant focus, finished with the Lehrabschlussprüfung. In Germany the equivalent trades are called Kfz-Mechatroniker/in, or, depending on specialty, Industriemechaniker/in or Zerspanungsmechaniker/in, trained through the dual system with the Handwerkskammer or IHK.

Certain welding processes require their own welder's certification to the relevant standards, often independent of your base trade. Foreign qualifications are recognised in Austria via the Wirtschaftskammer and in Germany via the relevant chamber. A master's certificate leads to running a workshop or self-employment.

Typical employers

Classic employers are car dealerships and independent garages, plus commercial vehicle and agricultural machinery businesses, bodywork and paint shops. In metalworking, employers include metal construction firms and manufacturing or industrial companies with their own production.

Larger dealership groups and industrial companies often offer structured training, for example on electric vehicles or new welding processes, while smaller garages offer more direct customer contact and a broader mix of tasks.

Working hours and pay

Workshop work is mostly day work with a commute home and fixed workshop hours, while industry often adds shift work, for example two or three shifts running CNC machines. Overnight travel is more the exception, for example for service technicians covering agricultural or commercial vehicles.

Pay in Austria typically follows the collective agreement for the automotive trade or the metal industry, in Germany the IG Metall trade agreements. Shift premiums and allowances for welding or difficult conditions are common additions.

What to check in a job posting

Check the equipment in the workshop or production hall, for example modern diagnostic tools, lifts or CNC machines, and look for training on electric vehicles, new welding processes or automation.

For shift work, look closely at the shift pattern and the premiums paid. A modern machine fleet and clearly defined responsibilities make a real difference to daily work.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a car mechatronics technician and a car mechanic?

In Germany, Kfz-Mechatroniker/in is the current training title, while car technician or car mechanic are older terms for the same or a similar role. In Austria the apprenticeship is called Kraftfahrzeugtechniker/in.

Do certain welding processes need their own certification?

Yes, many welding processes require a welder's certification to current standards, regardless of your original trade. Many employers let you gain this alongside the job.

Do machinists work shifts?

Often yes in industry, because CNC machines frequently run multiple shifts. In smaller metal construction businesses, pure day work is more common.

Will my foreign automotive or metalworking qualification be recognised?

In Austria the Wirtschaftskammer checks equivalence, in Germany the relevant Handwerkskammer or IHK. Starting as a workshop helper is often possible while the process is ongoing.

Conclusion

Automotive and metal trades stay in demand because vehicles and machinery need constant maintenance, repair and upgrading. With an apprenticeship or journeyman certificate and a willingness to keep training, for example toward electric mobility, both workshops and industrial employers are open to you.
