What electricians and electronics technicians do
The core of the job is running and connecting power, data and control cabling: from the distribution board in a new build, through rewiring older properties, to integrating solar, EV chargers and smart home systems. Fault-finding, testing to current standards and sign-off on finished installations round out the work.
Depending on your specialty you might work on new-build sites, in occupied buildings on service calls, or in industry on machines and switch cabinets. Experienced electricians often end up supervising smaller projects or training apprentices.
Training, qualification and recognition
In Austria, the standard route is an apprenticeship (Lehre) as an electrical technician with a specialty such as plant and operations engineering or building and energy technology, finishing with the Lehrabschlussprüfung. In Germany the equivalent trade is Elektroniker/in für Energie- und Gebäudetechnik, trained through the dual system with the Handwerkskammer and finished with the journeyman exam (Gesellenprüfung).
If you want more responsibility, your own workshop, or to run a business, you sit the master exam (Meisterprüfung). Foreign qualifications can be recognised: in Austria the Wirtschaftskammer checks equivalence, in Germany the relevant Handwerkskammer runs the recognition process. Starting as a helper or installer is usually possible while that process is ongoing.

Some roles are pure day work with a commute home every night, others involve site assignments with overnight stays, typically on larger or cross-regional projects. Industrial roles often add shift work or on-call duty for breakdown response.
Pay in Austria usually follows the collective agreement (Kollektivvertrag) for the electrical and electronics industry or the relevant trade agreement, in Germany the electrical trade's Tarifvertrag, negotiated regionally between the trade guilds and IG Metall. Allowances for site work, difficult conditions or on-call duty are common on top.
What to check in a job posting
Look at the tools and vehicle you'll be given, whether a company van can be used privately, and how site and on-call time is paid. Training on solar, EV charging or building automation is a good sign of a forward-looking employer.
If you want to avoid overnight travel, filter specifically for roles with a daily commute home. The order book and the state of the vehicle fleet often say more about job security than the ad itself.
